“Traditional Chinese acupuncture curbs the severity of hot flushes and other menopausal symptoms” – From Science daily.
The menopause is caused by a change in the balance of the body’s sex hormones. In the lead up to the menopause (perimenopause) oestrogen levels decrease, which causes the ovaries to stop producing an egg each month (ovulation). Oestrogen is the female sex hormone that regulates a woman’s periods.
Although most women experience the menopause when they are 45-55 years of age, it is possible, though rare, for some women to experience the menopause before they reach 45. This is known as premature ovarian failure. It can occur at any age and in many cases there is no cause.
The treatment of choice in Western Medicine is Hormone Replacement Therapy. According to breastcancer.org, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can ease menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and fatigue although current or recent past users of HRT have a higher risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Acupuncture is a natural alternative in the treatment of Menopause
Acupuncture offers natural and drug free relief from hot flushes, spontaneous sweating, mood swings, and dryness –without the negative side effects of modern drug therapy.
In my practice, the use of acupuncture has been very effective in relieving symptoms which women can begin experiencing as early as their late 30’s! Many suffer needlessly from mood swings, fatigue, diminished sex drive and worsening of PMS simply because they don’t recognize these are symptoms of pre menopause or menopause transition.
Chinese medicine’s view of women and the biological changes that they undergo is elegant and beautiful in its simplicity but effective in its treatment.
